On a trip through Canada’s maritime province Nova Scotia we came across this pastoral scene. Coming from Calgary, over 3,000 km west of here, we were seeing things that were so different from our roots in the Rockies. It should have been raving excitement but we caught the calmness of the day breaking moment. The water was like glass, nothing seemed to move; everything felt like it never moved. There was such a stillness we whispered. It was interesting, on reflection, that we sat down for a bit to watch absolutely nothing happen. It was one of the most peaceful moments I have ever had. Even taking the image did not break the spell.
In this second image I wanted to bring you in closer but also give an image that suggested more, that was breaking boundaries. When we crop an image like this, with the scene chopped off, the mind knows, of course, there is more, so it treats the image like it’s a window. Windows, being portals in the mind, take us into those places. I wanted that feeling here, like you’ve looked out on this peaceful scene, like it’s your cabin, your boat, your moment of stillness.
